Love and Relationship

Relationship is not all about love and intimacy. Love can not make a relationship last, or is the foundation of a strong relationship. A relationship should be base not just on love but respect. A person can love someone but can also hurt the one who they love. Love has many faces, and it is often used and abused by people who does not understand the true meaning of the word love. In ancient Greek’s definition of love there are three different kinds of loves.

  • Agape – This is what they call the unconditional love… I am not going to explain further because we all know what unconditional love is.
  • Eros – Erotic, passion, romance, the kind of love you feel for someone you want to share or make love with or to.
  • Philia – is the brotherly love, this is what we feel towards people who are important to us.

Recently wikipedia included Storge which is what they call “affectionate” love, Although in my own opinion this is just part of Eros.  However, we are not just focusing on love alone, not all people who fell in love can say that love only brings happiness. To some people Love can be detrimental to one’s life, it can bring sadness, tears, fear and even the opposite of the word love…Hate!

As earlier explained love can be a lot of things, you can use the word love to express your happiness because of ownership, not just to a person but also to things and event.

“I Love this bag!”
Hence, the word love which is suppose to be of great significance to people’s emotion has been weakened to its true sense.

So let us go back to the basic question if love should be a stable foundation for a relationship to last.

Some people say they love someone and be in a relationship with the other person, however, that person is not free of obligation or responsibility from a prior commitment, and is not ready to cease the other relationship, claiming that he or she loves the other person or his/her family as well. Where is the foundation of love?

Love is the ultimate expression of humanity, it is what separates us from other form of beings. Love is suppose to be the unwavering feeling that a person can give whoever he/she chooses to love, yet love should be accompanied by respect.

When there is respect given to the person you offer your love to, and you are in a relationship, I can assure you that the foundation you instill will be strong and more lasting. Respect comes with how you give time to the person you love, for you will always find time to make sure that the one you love feel the importance. Respect for the person you love comes with being faithful to that person, if you respect a person, you will honor your promise that you will only give your only heart this special person.

So the next time you say “I Love You” make sure you mean and really feel it. It is very easy to be wrong about your emotion, but always make sure to respect each and every person you want to say “I Love You ” to, because you do not know how much it can affect someone’s life.

How about you? How do you strengthen the foundation of your relationship?
